S.K.I.P. PROGRAM

It is not too late to enroll your student in the S.K.I.P program.
Established in 1984, by the Federation in partnership with B’nai Jacob and Achduth Vesholom, and revised in November, 1999, the program has provided a savings vehicle for many families and has helped make a trip to Israel a reality for so many of our youth. The Federation portion of the savings plan is provided by income from the Federation Endowment Fund.
The Federation, for each year a child participates in S.K.I.P., will contribute $200.00 per year per child.  This will be matched by a Congregational contribution of $75.00 per year.  Your parent contribution, on behalf of each participating child, will be $175.00 or more per year, per participating child.
The program is available to local youth enrolled in their respective congregational religious schools in grades 1-10.
Each S.K.I.P account is matched by a $180 gift from the HY AND LORRY GOLDENBERG BIRTHRIGHT FUND.

Bill and Clara Brosler Youth Leadership Award

This award was established in honor and in memory of Bill and Clara Brosler.    Through their generosity and concern for the future, the Fort Wayne Jewish Federation has a secure future and the ability to maintain and develop new programs.
The Brosler Youth Leadership Award was established to honor the achievements of Fort Wayne Jewish youth demonstrating leadership in their activities at their respective congregation and recognizes their successful balancing of Jewish leadership, academics, and activities in the community. The award is a $250 grant to be used by the selected youth for Jewish Youth group conference fees, camp tuition, Israel trip expenses, Jewish training or Jewish educational opportunities.
As part of the selection process for this award, students nominate themselves.  The final selection will be by members of the Youth Committee. Selections are based on a variety of criteria.
Recipients receive a plaque and certificate and a plaque bearing their names is displayed in the Federation office. Libby Dicker and Dan Cohen were the 2003 recipients.  Libby used her award towards her GUCI camp tuition. Dan attended a weekend trip with his religious school classmates and Rabbi Katz to the Reform Action Center in Washington, DC.
Nominees for this award must be in grades 9-11. Forms will be mailed shortly to parents and their children.  The self-nominations are due by May 1, 2004.
This is a great award to honor the accomplishments of our community youth that have demonstrated leadership and met the criteria of the award.  Winners will be notified by mail and the award will be presented at the Federation’s Annual Meeting. If you have any questions, please contact Jeff Gubitz at the Federation office.

JEWISH COMMUNITY RELATIONS

The Fort Wayne Jewish Federation has a long time commitment to being active in all civic matters, whether it be local issues, school board issues, or issues of national concern. We work on building partnerships on issues of mutual concern with other local civic groups, coalitions and agencies. The Federation is proud to be a partner with the United Way locally and several national agencies including the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (formally NJCRAC), ADL, American Jewish Committee and the American Jewish Congress. The Federation sponsors programs annually on Holocaust Memorial Day (Yom Hashoah), Israel Independence Day and others. Federation provides lists of all Jewish holidays to all local schools and superintendents in the region, offers workshops on Holocaust education and other issues of mutual interest.

JEWISH COMMUNITY CULTURAL PROGRAMS

The Fort Wayne Jewish Federation is pleased to sponsor a variety of cultural events for both the Jewish community and the general community throughout the year. Among the highlights on our cultural calendar: Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Service), The Alex Honig People of the Book lecture featuring an outstanding author on a subject of interest to the community.

ISRAEL MISSIONS THROUGH UJC

Fort Wayne’s Federation is always the very best resource if you're interested in Israel travel, Israel for teens, summer programs for teens, and exchange programs. Other excellent sources on the Internet are: http://www.goisrael.com for general Israel travel and http://www.israelexperience.com for information on teen summer experiences in Israel.

JEWISH FREE LOAN FUND

The Federation Endowment supports the Jewish free loan fund, an emergency, no interest loan fund for those who find themselves in a difficult financial position. The program is administered by the Federation Director.  Applications for these emergency funds are made through the Federation office.

JEWISH CEMETERIES

Most Jews involved in our religious institutions make arrangements for burial at either Lindenwood Cemetery or the Jewish Cemetery. While there are no strictly Jewish funeral homes, most are acquainted with Jewish rituals surrounding death. There is an active Chevra Kadisha society which functions for the entire Jewish community as requested. Burial plots are separate from the Chevra Kadisha.
